I have to admit that I’ve never quite understood why some people use a photo of themselves with a friend or loved one as their social media profile photo. I just always felt that social media profile photos should be of the individual only.
Well, I’ve seen the light! Actually I just created another Twitter account specifically for interacting strictly on a personal level with friends, family
and new acquaintances. (If you want to connect with me on my personal account go to www.twitter.com/KimberlyYowFavs.) My first thought when I was scanning my computer looking for an appropriate profile photo was to use a photo of me holding one of my cats…because that is something very personal to me.
When I couldn’t find a good photo, I had to think again. So I searched for a close up photo of my husband and I…and that’s what I uploaded. All of a sudden it dawned on me that I had just done what I’ve seen other people do and never understood.
So, here’s my new advice for profile photos. The best profile photos are:
- close-ups or head shots (so that you are recognizable in the thumbnail version of the photo)
- professional, non-silly photos for your BUSINESS profiles
- personal photos for PERSONAL profiles
Since all of my social media profiles were business-oriented, up until now, I got stuck in the ‘all photos must be professional’ mode. As silly as it may sound, I now understand why so many of my Facebook friends use personal photos as their profile images…they don’t have a business…and they use their Facebook profiles strictly for personal interactions.
I’m glad I finally got my head out of the ‘strictly business’ cloud…LOL!
What do you think is an appropriate social media profile photo? Do you have different photos for your business accounts and your personal accounts?
No longer in the clouds,
Kimberly
(By the way, the photo above is the one I used for my personal Twitter account. It was taken at a restaurant where we were celebrating our daughter’s 21st birthday.)
