A new report was just released by Sysomos after analyzing the activity of 11.5 million Twitter accounts. The report covers who is using Twitter…on what days of the week…during which hours…and more. It also reports that an astonishing 85.3% of the general Twitter population have never posted a tweet (a status update on Twitter). Also interesting is that 75% of all tweets are generated by a mere 5% of Twitter accounts.
I actually discovered something interesting the other day when I was reviewing my new Followers. One of my new Followers was following over 1,100 users and they had 774 Followers of their own. Amazing to me…absolutely amazing! What? That this account has 774 Followers and they’ve never posted a single tweet. If the main reason for following someone on Twitter is to stay up-to-date with what they are doing and to reap the benefits of the info & resources they post…why would 774 users follow someone who has never tweeted? The answer, I’m sure, is auto-follow…something I think defeats the purpose of Twitter!!

So, what’s all the Twitter about?

Thanks Johnny & Brown! Not a journalist…but I do enjoy writing!
thank you! I really liked this post!
I really like your blog and i respect your work. I’ll be a frequent visitor.
I often observed the same phenomenon, with a mere 20 tweets how someone could get a 11000 something followers. But what is that someone wants to do with such a huge # of followers, this I don’t understand.
Thanks for the share the findings of the report.
Thanks for all the comments! I plan to write a future post about “auto-follow”. – Kimberly
