Facebook Friend Limit: Accounts May Be Deactivated

by Kimberly Yow on April 17, 2009

Facebook limits a personal profile to 5000 friends and they have been known to deactivate your account when you reach that number WITHOUT any prior notification.  If you, or someone you know, is a public figure this could easily happen.  For instance, I just became a FB Friend of John Assaraf’s and noticed he has over 4500 friends.

Public figures, companies and associations can create a Company Fan Page in addition to their personal profile.  Here are some of the benefits of doing this:

  1. There is no limit to the number of Fans you can have.
  2. Fan Pages have similar components to a personal page such as tabs for a wall, info, photos, videos, notes, etc…
  3. You can add additional applications to your Fan Page.
  4. Your messages get published in your Fan’s news feed.
  5. You can give people a link that will take them directly to your Fan Page.
  6. The name of your Fan Page becomes part of the URL and can therefore contain your primary keyword(s).
  7. You can have multiple administrators for your Fan Page so the upkeep is shared.
  8. If an administrator leaves your company, you simply remove them as an administrator to the Fan Page and your Fans never even know that anything has changed.

If you have a Facebook Personal Profile that is reaching it’s Friends Limit, there is a way to keep people from requesting friendship.   The setting you need to change is in your Privacy Settings.  If you do this, be sure to set-up a Fan Page first and provide the link to your Fan Page on your personal profile.

If you have any questions, please post as a comment.
