I ran into someone today that I had just connected with on Facebook. They said, “Isn’t Facebook just for personal use?” I said, “No, absolutely not.”
While many people use Facebook only for personal communications, you can also interject info about your business onto your profile. For instance, you can:
- post info about your company under the Education and Work
- post work related info under Interests, About Me, Website Link, etc…
- add business related Links, Photos, Notes, Blogs, etc…
- once in a while you can even answer “What Are You Doing Right Now?” with a business-oriented answer or question
You can also utilize Facebook groups for business purposes.
The key to using Facebook for business is to also make it personal. After all, networking online is no different than networking in person. You have to establish relationships with your online friends just as you do with people you meet at chamber mixers, networking events, business conferences, etc…
I find that using Facebook has allowed me to develop deeper personal relationships with members of my former BNI group as well as with my customers. I really do feel that you can mix business and pleasure (friendship) on Facebook. After all, people do business with people they know, like and trust.
Here’s to great personal relationships and networking…online and off!
