A common complaint I hear about social networking sites is that people are getting contacted by people from their past that they don’t want to connect with.
I’ve also heard stories of siblings or friends posting silly photos and stories on another person’s profile much to their dismay. For instance, a friend of mine wants to use his Facebook profile for interacting with patients and business contacts and he does not want personal photos and comments posted on his wall by siblings, etc…
In Facebook, and other social networking sites, you have a lot of control over who can find you in a search, who sees your profile, who can send you messages, who can post to your wall, etc… A lot of people don’t realize this and/or don’t take the time to adjust their settings.
If you have a Facebook profile and have never looked at your settings, I recommend that you do so soon. Log in to your Facebook account, click on Settings in the upper right hand corner of your screen and then take the time to adjust your Account Settings, Privacy Settings and Application Settings.
Do you want to go so far as to Block a Person from interacting with you or seeing your Facebook profile? You can! Go to your Privacy Settings and scroll down until you see the following text:
Block People
If you block someone, they will not be able to find you in a Facebook search, see your profile, or interact with you through Facebook channels (such as Wall posts, Poke, etc.). Any Facebook ties you currently have with a person you block will be broken (for example, friendship connections, Relationship Status, etc.). Note that blocking someone may not prevent all communications and interactions in third-party applications, and does not extend to elsewhere on the Internet.
Simply enter the name of the person you want to block and click the BLOCK button.
Taking the time to adjust all of your settings will help you customize your Facebook experience and ensure that your profile is used the way you want it to be used.
Here’s to productive social networking!
